Chapter 1: General Rules
Summary
1) Using the methods in this document, analyze the importance of information, identify key information.
Key information include: special punctuations and characters, special sentences, key words, and opinion sentences (if there are opinions). (Some natural science articles have opinion sentences)
2) Don’t read every sentence. If a sentence has nothing special or important, skip the sentence.
3) When read choices, pay attention to key words. If there is a wrong key word, the choice should be given up immediately. If a choice has several key words consistent with key information in article, choose the choice even if you don’ understand all words in the choice.
Key information
1. Special punctuations and characters:
All punctuations except comma and period are special punctuations.
2. Special sentences
Pay attention to following signal words and key information around signal words. Correct answers are usually related to the key information in articles.
1) Not…but…, however, not, but, not only…but also…
Many reading questions are related to not, but, however.
HOWEVER is must-test. The information after however must be read carefully.
NOT…BUT… is almost must-test. Information after but is the key. ( look for information after BUT rather than before BUT)
2) Negative words (information related to negative words has the right answer), including:
A) not, no, never
B) fail, lack, avoid, difficult, different, loss, without, few, little , wrong, doubt, whether,
-free, free of, absence, miss , assume(positive or negative), appear to
C) words with negative prefix and negative suffix (VERY important, even more important than NOT)
un-, im-, in-, de-, di-, dis-, under-, -less.
3) Comparative and superlative (-er, -est, more, most, less, least…)
must-test: The more…., the more…
4) Comparison sentence
Like, unlike, as…as, than
5) Parallel structure: parallel sentences, parallel phrases, parallel words.
6) Question sentences: why, who, what, how…?
Correct answer is related to the information following the question sentence.
7) Inversion sentence. Identify the subject and verb. If necessary, learn inversion grammar first.
8) Condition: if/when/while
9) Contrast sentence: whereas/while/though/although
10) Cause-effect sentence: because, since, so, for
11) Emphasize: Must-test
A) Words: even, only, mere, just, indeed, ever, important, importance
B) Phrases: in fact, what’s more, more importantly, in addition, too…to…
C) Adverbs of degree: greatly, highly, significantly, particularly …
(words modified by these adverbs are related to correct answers.)
D) Sentence: so…that…, such….that…
